Destroy the Planet!

April 23, 2009

It was Earth Day this past Wednesday. Holidays are good but holidays that lead to good habits are better. For instance, when Valentine’s Day comes around boyfriends, husbands, and that desperate guy take full advantage of demonstrating their love and affection for their loved ones with fuzzy bears, chocolate platters, and Transformer Valentine’s Day cards (I wouldn’t hesitate to give those out either).

But we all know rose, candy, and love note sales go down after the holiday.

Is Valentine’s Day an excuse to “love” once a year or motivation to LOVE the other 364 instead of just one?

So…back to Earth Day. There are various views about the important day. There’s the, “I’ll celebrate by using the ground as a trashcan,” guy. Or, “The earth’s gonna be destroyed in a catastrophic apocalypse, so let’s get the party started early,” preacher. And, “I love trees more than people,” dude.

Yes they’re wack, crazy, stereotypical but we all know them personally or from our friends Facebook page. Here’s where I’ve landed…brew on this.

I believe we exist to honor and enjoy the God who created us.

That’s why we exist! But at face value it can be confusing, unclear, and intimidating.

There are many facets to this from obeying God’s Word, sharing Jesus’ love, truth, and forgiveness with everyone, and even caring for the planet He’s put us on.

Now there are a lot of people affiliated with church out there who want nothing to do with caring for the earth, recycling, or decreasing their carbon footprint. I think they’re missing a chance to honor and enjoy God. Then there are those who think God wants nothing to do with those who do a lot for the environment. Well, once they come to the place of accepting why they exist their contributions to earth will on take a deeper and more significant purpose.

Earth Day was Wednesday. You may have celebrated it or completely overlooked it. But don’t wait till next year to support it. Whether the earth will be destroyed by a meteorite or fight 12 rounds against the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, why not take care of the land on which we live? If we disregard our part to play we may lose the opportunity to play a part sooner than we think (cause I don’t think God’s going to destroy the planet but we may.)

Give it a go:

  • Use a travel mug everytime you go to Starbucks (or Nalgene for non-coffee drinkers).
  • Ride your bike to school or work once a week.
  • Plant a tree.
  • Turn off the lights when you’re out of the room more than 5 minutes.
  • Reach for a dish towel to clean up spills.
