I have had my heart broken and have broken my fair share of hearts. The truthful thing is I have done the breaking more than I have been broken.

Broken hearts usually come from our relationships. Couples break each others hearts. Children break their parent’s hearts. Friends break hearts. If you never want another broken heart move to a remote island. But the lack of food may lead to a broken heart any way.

Broken hearts have all kinds of affects on people. It has lead people to obsession. It has lead people to seclusion. Broken hearts make people trust less. Broken hearts hurt feelings and futures. One of the crazy things is that even though most of us have had our hearts broken we give love, friendship, family another try. We decline the remote island option because the appeal of companionship is stronger than the pain of heart break.

We all have countless stories of our hearts being broken but how often has your heart been broken by the pain, hurt, and suffering in our world?

My heart broke for a group of my friends earlier this week. A heaviness came over me and I hurt for them. My heart broke on their behalf. Has your heart broken over someone else’s struggle? Someone else’s confusion, addiction, or fear? The world’s hunger, captivity, or weakness?

I’m realizing that a broken heart is good for those in need. If my heart never breaks I will never act. Embracing someone’s pain is one of the first steps to entering their pain to offer healing, support, and companionship (what everyone desires remember).

One of the initiating factors of Jesus’ mission was a broken heart. God’s heart breaks over humanity captivity to sin which can be seen all around us. His broken heart lead to Jesus’ mission to set people free through His love, truth, forgiveness, and freedom.

The Bible reveals the heart of God through the words and actions of Jesus…

When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:36 + 14:14)

O Jerusalem…How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (Luke 13:34)

Jesus wept (John 11:1-43)

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. (John 14:1)

We know what if feels like to have our heart broken by someone we loved. But the Bible shows us that we need a heart that breaks by someone who is hurt. When Jesus’ heart was broken for the poor, captive, handicapped, and oppressed He didn’t just sigh or crochet a cheesy saying on a pillow. Jesus, God in human form, entered humanity’s pain. And the world has never been the same.
